Located in the 900 North building on Chicago's Michigan Avenue (or the Magnificent Mile as out of towner's call it) now resides a "new" type of general store for both men and women. Curated by past JAKE founder Jim Wetzel,
Space519 features a unique blend of clothing, apothecary, luggage, jewelry, and even vintage furniture and artifacts. Clothing highlights for me were my friends at
Baldwin Denim's two styles of raw denim,
S.N.S. Herning knits, and
Matt Singer oxfords. As far as the overall product range, you can't really build an entire wardrobe there yet, but I liked the vibe of the store and its potential for growth. Something Chicago is lacking in the bridge boutiques between say a Barney's and the GAP, and think this place could evolve into the sort of space that the city needs. Most of all I liked my chat with Jim; hearing about the misconceptions of the business, the struggles in retail over the last few years, and how he plans to create something unique that people will enjoy visiting whether shopping or just hanging out. Hopefully he takes my advice and brings in local Chicago brewery Half Acre Beer for the customers... or just me... if you're in town stop by and take a stroll through the ever changing store. Thanks for the time Jim.
