The Idea of a Personal Uniform

The more I learn, the more I want to forget...

As I've become exposed to more and more brands, and built a great diverse closet, the more now I'm looking towards the simpler [clothing] life.

The idea has taken shape over the last few months with thoughts of all the excess, trends, fads, whatever you want to call it. It's not that I don't love learning anymore, discovering new brands and the story of their evolution, it's more of the fact that I'm tiring of the idea of men looking at style as the acquisition of a singular item, brand, and or even a "look".

I think it's awesome that guys are starting to care more and more about how they look, the clothes they buy, and the style they want to achieve. For me however, I'm really starting to adopt an idea and think of my style in more of the terms of a presence, maybe even a sort of uniform, and actually adopting a more stringent regimen.

Case Study: Think of the past icons, and trust me I know its overused, but look at McQueen, Brando, Newman... most of the time you saw them in casual staples, denim, tees, crewneck sweatshirts, boots, etc. Yes they wore suits, but they were also famous and that was part of the gig. Then look at when they were photographed anywhere but the red carpet, it was always in staples. Those standout garments/pieces, or "grail status" shit that everyone now seems to be trying to attain, (Persols, that badass trench coat, those Rolex's) those things were always used and worn sparingly and appropriately.

This sort of thinking has made me wonder what a regimen might entail for myself:

Denim - a nice pair of dry straight cut 5 pocket denim, wear until destroyed, buy another
Shirting - blue/white OCBD's, slim fit shirts that are long enough to tuck and I'm ready to roll
Socks - if needed,
Belt - I basically only wear the same natural leather one so I'm set
Watch - buy a great automatic, put on and forget
Navy Blazer - probably would have a few styles and patterns, but sticking to navy would be easy and always appropriate, might live life on the edge and mix in a charcoal every once in awhile

Here's what I think I would switch up daily:

Ties
Footwear
Outerwear

Like I said, I've been thinking about it, I haven't adopted it, and don't know if I will... but I'm thinking about it.

With my own style I've always had a simple goal...

"I never really want to be noticed when walking into a room, but always remembered after I've left."

I think dressing in a way that's not always brand, label, or trend driven, but more focused on fit, matching your personality, and ultimately helping you feel truly comfortable in your clothing is the path to real style. I just hope more men can figure that part out.

After the long awaited return of Sierra Designs featuring stateside production, the brands like Crescent Down Works and Mt. Rainier have lost a little bit of the spotlight. Although I love my Sierra Designs from a few years ago, attained through a friend in Japan, the new ones left a lot to be desired in terms of fit. Square, short sleeves, and just sort of awkward fitting for me at least. These pieces from Mt. Rainier Design however have always fit me spot on; a little longer, longer sleeves, and insulated for warmth. These are by no means a cheap purchase, and actually quite pricey, but being American made and lasting a lifetime shouldn't come cheap. Available at Rooney

I'm not usually one for reposting fashion show images, but these images from the Ermanno Scervino line have me really thinking through simple casual wear for spring. The fitted but not super-slim knits, and the cropped trousers paired with tassels and loafers look amazing and comfortable. The colors are cool and clean, with hints of red make the whole line really cohesive and fun.

I love the simplicity of these looks... so here's what to take from this:

Grab a pair of navy and gray slim trousers, take them to the tailor and have them cropped with no break
simple knits, find a thin pale blue cardigan with tonal buttons, a gray crewneck sweatshirt, and a few henleys to layer with
pair these with a pair of tassel loafers, suede plain-toe bluchers, and maybe even a pair of venetian/velvet slippers

A category that I often forget to mention (or even wear) are knits and sweaters. The layers are often covered, very warm (I hardly ever need a real coat), and add bulk to my looks... but they are a style essential and if worn right, work well to add texture to your look.

St. James Stripped Sweater - striped sweaters dress up a simple overcoat and jeans
SNS Herning Cardigan - this piece I love because of the simple texture, the easy on-off of a cardigan style, so I'd wear this with a vest, maybe a not so cold ass day... with the ability to throw a scarf on and maybe even take off indoors
Gant Varsity V-Neck - this is the athletic alternative to that stupid ass jersey the guy at the Big-Ten bar is rocking. Stick to simple colors with a v-neck to stay away from douchebagery, and also it just adds to the wearability of the garment.
Left Field Crew - staple, everyone needs this sweatshirt, I love it, wear it and need another one Christian! ha.
APC Fair Isle - fairisle is a not-for-everyone print but I love subtle takes in this pattern like this APC adaption. Also noted, this is not just for holiday parties.
Ovadia and Sons Shawl Collar - for the lux play, I prefer shawl cardigans; super chunky, buy higher quality and a fitted but not skinny cut. You'll want to wear this over buttondowns and it acts almost like outerwear.

Rogue Territory - New Stantons

My go-to raw denim fit the Stanton is now in a few new versions, including a dark overdyed version, a black version, as well as the classic indigo. I'm re-upping my raw indigo's for the fall and really love this new fit. Great rise that allows for tucking and no ass crack flashing, and increased thigh room with a slightly tapered but non douchy tight leg. Easy win.

The guys in Brooklyn are finally unveiling their new stand-alone Hickorees store; following the success of the online and J.Crew pop-up stores. Opening this weekend in Williamsburg, the space is on a second floor walk up that has a great open hardware store meets clothing boutique. I really like the clean and editable feel with product assortment and art. I'm excited to see the space and product evolve. Thanks for the early look gents, congrats again!
